GLOSSARY (SOCIAL SCIENCE) UNIT 3
State = the supreme public power within a sovereign political entity
Sovereignty = the authority to rule over an area. In a democracy, the people have sovereignty because they vote for the government
Constitution = a collection of country's fundamental laws that shape the government, institutions and rights and obligations of the citizens.
Democracy = a government in which the people have power, exercised either directly or through elected representatives
Monarchy = the king or the queen is the head of the state
Dictatorship = a system of government in which one person with absolute power governs. They are supported by a political party, an ethnic group or army
Globalisation = the integration and development of a world wide economic system( of institutions, markets...
Regional = is a territory that usually has a strong economy and a well-defined social and cultural identity
Cultural diversity = the quality of diverse or different culture
Universal Suffrage = a system of a democratic elections whereby all citizens of voting age can participate regardless of their gender or economic situation
Legislative power = to make and vote laws and control the government. This lies with the parliament
Executive power = to execute the laws and set state policy. This lies with the government
Judicial power = to apply the law, that is, judge and punish citizens who break it. This lies with the tribunals
Supranational = beyond the authority of one national government
Mass culture = a world wide characteristic by similar patterns of consumption
UN = a supranational organisation composed for over 190 member states. It was found in 1945 to promote peace, security and economic development
NGO = an entity with humanitarian and social aims
Civil servant = the people that dedicated to different functions, such as justice, health, teaching, finance and public works.
Justice = What should be done according to the law or reason
Liberty = the power of choosing, thinking, and acting for oneself; freedom from control or restriction
Subsidiarity = the principle of devolving decisions to the lowest practical level
Culture = is the collection of common customs, knowledge and ways of living that a group recognise as their own, and something that differentiates them from other groups
Multiculturalism = the coexistence of diverse culture within a community
Interculturalism = promotes the coexistence of different groups of human because cultural relations enrich everybody
Referendum = submission of an issue of public ideas importance to the direct vote of the electorate
Election = the selection by vote of a person or persons from Among candidates for a position, esp a political office

Temperature = the degree of a hotness of a body or a weather
Savannah = grasslands, usually with scattered bushes or trees, characteristic of much of tropical Africa
Oases = a fertile part in a desert occurring where the water table approaches or reaches the ground surface
Taiga = the coniferous forest extending across much of subarctic North America and Eurasia
Precipitation = rain, snow, sleet, dew... formed by a condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere
Tundra = a bass treeless zone lying between the ice cap and timberline of North America and Eurasia
Settlements = the person who lived in the desert
Jungle = an equatorial forest are with luxuriant vegetation
Livestock = cattle, horses and similar animals kept for domestic use
Desert = a region that is devoid or almost devoid vegetation
Scrub = similar to the grassland
Steppe = an extensive grassy plain
Holm oak = an evergreen Mediterranean oak tree
Deciduous forest = (trees and scrubs) shedding all leaves annually at the end of the growing season
Logging = the work of felling, trimming and transporting timber
Meadows = an area of grassland, often used for pasturage

FIX IT DAY
Yesterday, there was a fix it day in the streets of Villamayor. All the people of this town participated to clean up the parks, streets... Some people were cleaning the streets while others were watering the trees and plants around the town. There were many people so we finished very fast and we collected all the rubbish of Villamayor until there were nothing. We we grateful for all people who participated and we proposed to do this fix it day once a month.

GLOSSARY UNIT 2
THE BIG CHEESE: is the most important or powerful person in a group or organization
CHALK AND CHEESE: we use this expression to define two people who are very different to each other
A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME: if we have some information but you don't want to reveal who told you then you use this expression
TO BE OR TO HAVE A BIG MOUTH: it means you talk to much especially about things which should be kept in secret or avoided
ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW: it is very colourful
CHASING RAINBOWS: refers to someone who is always looking for something more exciting and rewarding but it is unlikely to find it
IF YOU ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE: you are doing something which could be dangerous
IF YOU ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE: it means you make a bad situation even worse
IF YOU HAVE A FLASH OF INSPIRATION: it means that you sudden have an idea that help you to create or achieve what you were hoping to do
A BIG FISH IN A SMALL POND: if we describe someone with this expression it means that he or she is very important or have a lot of influence but only in small area or group
COLD FISH: if someone is described with this expression it means that he or she is unfriendly and doesn't show his or her feelings or emotions
PACKED LIKE SARDINES: to describe people in a very crowded space
CHOCK A BLOCK: to describe people in a very crowded situation
LIKE A DUCK TO WATER: it means that you discover when you start doing a new activity that you are very good at it

GLOSSARY(GEOGRAPHY)
INLET: a thin channel of water that leads inland from the sea. Inlets created by glaciation are called fjords and are usually found on mountains coastlines
HEADLAND: a small area of land that projects out into the sea
PENINSULA: a large scale headland surrounded by water on three sides. A peninsula can be connected to the land by a thin stretch of land called isthmus
ISLAND: a piece of land completely surrounded by water
GULF: an area of sea surrounded by land on three sides. A bay is similar but smaller
OCEANIC RIDGE: an underwater mountain range that generally covers a large area and reaches high altitudes
OCEANIC TRENCH: a long depression on the ocean floor that can be deep
ABYSSAL PLAIN: a flat area on the ocean floor, they are found at depths of between 3000 metres and 7000 metres
CONTINENTAL SHELF: the under sea extension of a continent that descends gradually to depths of around 400 metres. The shelf can be extended by few or many kilometres
CONTINENTAL SLOPE: a steep underwater area that links the continental shelf with the oceanic floor
MOUNTAIN: a large land form that is higher than the surrounded land. A mountain is a continuous chain of mountains
BASIN: an area of land that is drained by a river or a lake and that is lower than the surrounding area
VALLEY: is a linear depression in the land
PLATEAU: a flat area of land which sits a certain altitude above the sea level
PLAIN: a larger, open, flat or slightly undulating area of land
CLIFF: a high, steep or overhanging face of rock
MASSIF: a large mass or compact group of connected mountains forming an independent portion of a range
CURITIBA
Curitiba is one of the cleanest country in the world, this country uses a lot the public transport, the air that you breath in this country is very healthy and clean.
This country is very recycling because Jaime Lerner made an ecological city and won many awards, for example in 1990, this country won two international awards.
This country use clean techonologies too, that do not generate toxic waste. Curitiba recycles the waste in a exemplary way and it is in the third place in the list of the 15 green cities all over the world.
Curitiba contributes to the recycling trash and if you will go to Curitiba you will not see any trash in the ground.

It was created on the 8th of may in 1986 in a chemist in Atlanta. At first it was created as a medicine to relieve headache and nausea concealed, then became famous and begin to sell in the U.S.A where some lawyers bought a company and sold the coke all over the world. Now the coke formula is a comercial secret and it is stored in a bank of Atlanta where only two managers have access.

-TO TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS= to deal with a different situation in a brave and firm
way.
-TWO HEADS
ARE BETTER THAN ONE= means that two people working together are more likely
than one.
-TO KEEP YOUR HEAD ABOVE WATER= means that you are just managing to survive despite not having much money.
PIE
-IT'S AS EASY AS PIE= if something is very easy.
-PIE-EYED= if someone is very drunk.
-TO HAVE A FINGER IN MANY PIES= it means that you are involved in lots of different activities.
EGG
-A BAD EGG= in english if we want to say that someone is bad or dishonest, we can call him/her a bad egg.
-DON'T PULL ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET= it means that you should never rely on only one plan in case it goes wrong.
-TO GET EGG ON YOUR FACE= if someone makes a mistake wich makes him/her look stupid, we can say this expression.

BEANS
-FULL OF BEANS= when someone is full of energy.
-I HAVEN'T GOT A BEAN= means that you have not money at all.
-SPILL THE BEAN= in english if we want to tell us something secret, we can say to them" spill the bean ".
-THEY ARE LIKE TWO PEAS IN A POD= if two people look very similar we use this expression.
TEA
-IT'S NOT MY CUP OF TEA= if there is something we don't like much: sport, atype of music, a person...
-I WOULDN'T DO IT FOR ALL THE TEA IN CHINA= we use this expression if there iis something we would never do it.
-IT'S AS GOOD AS A CHOCOLATE TEAPOT= if something is completely useless we say this expression.
FRUIT
-HE IS GONE BANANAS= if someone is very emocional and starts shouting and behaving in a crazy way, we can say this expression.
-IT'S A CASE OF SOUR GRAPES= if somebody pretends not to be impresed by something because she/he feels jealous.
-A SECOND BITE OF THE CHERRY= if we try to do something at second time because we failed at first we use this expression.
OTHER EXPRESSIONS
-THERE ARE PLENTY MORE FISH IN THE SEA= it means that thre are more choices in a situation. It's often said to comfort someone who had a romantic break up.
-THE ICING ON THE CAKE= it is use to refer to something good wich is added to an already good thing on situation.
-IT IS JUST NOT CRIKET= it's use to say that sommething is un fair or dishonest.
-TO TOY WITH (SOMEONE OR SOMETHING)= means not to take someone feelingd seriously.
-TOYBOY= to be younger than your girldfriend.
- LIKE A TON OF BRICKS= it's used to express something that is very heavy/this expression can be used literatuly( heavy weight)/or idiomaticaly(to describe a great surprise or someone that is overweight).
-TO FLY THE NEST= means to leave your parent's home for the first time to go and live somewhere else.
-A NEST EGG= is an amount of money you have saved in the future.
-I WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY= if someone is telling you a obvious lie, you can use this expression.
-TO HAVE A WHALE OF TIME= means to have a lot of fun.
-SIZE OF A WHALE= it is an impolite way they are large and overweight.
FOOD
-GE= genetically enginered.
-GM=genetically modified.
-GMO= genetically modified organism.
